Meet Faradena Afifi

Faradena, a British Afghani community musician, has been playing music all her life. She is a full time T'ai Chi Chuan practitioner and teacher. Fara is influenced by movement, meditation, nature - especially birdsong - improvisation and musical forms that involve complex or compound rhythms. She loves listening to music from all over the world.  When not teaching, leading community sessions or performing on stage, she is often out busking with Cambridge based troubadour, Banjo Nick Ward.

Fara sings and plays a variety of instruments including, viola, cello, fiddle, double bass, piano and percussion. She enjoys exploring traditional folk songs with new arrangements, soundscapes, rhythms and sounds from all over the world. At the heart of what she plays is collaboration with like-minded musicians.  She is involved musically with a number of local and international folk musicians and a variety of improvising musicians and artists in large and small ensembles. Key to her creative approach are the diverse and vibrant intersections of art, poetry, dance, and music.

LYRICAL PROJECT

Fara has an exciting new project with children's illustrator Joy Rutherford, who is making drawings of the lyrics to be made into two books to go with Fara's next two folk albums. Joy's drawings are lyrical and bring the words to life. The albums will involve the Faradena & Friends collective, who will make exciting new versions of traditional folk songs and original songs using eastern rhythms and experimental music. The first album will be an expansion of the original EP 'Flash of Blue' with a central theme of nature and includes field recordings. The second album, 'Searching for The Golden Needle', involves the supernatural and explorers the subconscious, with a central theme of meditation.
